Grievance Redress Mechanism
At 400Forests, we are committed to maintaining transparency, equity, and accountability in every program and partnership. Our Grievance Redress Mechanism (GRM) exists to ensure that individuals, communities, and stakeholders affected by our work have a safe and accessible channel to raise concerns, especially those involving human rights, environmental harm, or social impacts.
A grievance may include—but is not limited to—issues such as:
-
Exclusion of vulnerable or Indigenous groups from consultation or failure to uphold free, prior, and informed consent (FPIC);
-
Environmental harm resulting from project activities, including pollution, resource disruption, or biodiversity loss;
-
Risks to community health and safety, including disruptions caused by infrastructure or operational impacts;
-
Land use conflicts, including restrictions on resource access or disputes related to tenure or relocation
We recognize that every community we serve is different, and we are committed to making our grievance system flexible, inclusive, and culturally sensitive. Grievances may be submitted verbally, in writing, or through trusted local leaders or institutions with whom communities feel safe. 400Forests will make every effort to ensure translation, confidentiality, and support throughout the process.
Where appropriate, local grievance committees will be established, comprising community representatives, project leaders, and civil society actors to ensure collaborative resolution. At the organizational level, the 400Forests Grievance Review Panel—including program directors, social safeguards experts, and legal advisors—will oversee and address submitted concerns in a timely, just, and transparent manner.
Anyone wishing to raise a grievance can do so confidentially by emailing grievance@400forests.org, contacting our regional office, or accessing our online grievance form at www.400forests.org/grievance. We are also working with local partners to ensure physical drop-in channels are available in areas where we operate.
We believe in co-created solutions, and we acknowledge the power of dialogue, respect, and local ownership in resolving challenges. Our aim is not to replace community-based resolution processes but to complement and strengthen them with formal avenues of redress—rooted in fairness, participation, and human dignity.
"Professional grievance systems create space for dialogue, de-escalation, and remedy. They align ethical intentions with real-world impact. Mechanisms must be visible, accessible, and adaptive to the context they serve. Addressing grievances promptly protects people, strengthens programs, and upholds mission integrity."

The environment we have is not just the space we live in, it is the intricate system of air, water, soil, climate, plants, and animals that makes life possible. Healthy ecosystems regulate the planet’s temperature, purify water, store carbon, pollinate crops, and protect us from natural disasters. But this balance is rapidly being disrupted. Add your Voice!
